These components play the significant role of precisely elaborating and explaining public speaking as a concept. Introduction to Public Speaking is a class that has helped make these components known to us. This was achieved by creating three groups that helped explore public speaking to deeper levels. The group found it necessary to state the several reasons why public speaking is unique. They mentioned factors such as it contains more informal conversations with fewer rules. Apart from understanding how public speaking is unique, it is essential to recognize factors to avoid while offering a presentation. These factors include plagiarism, insulating the audience, and exhausting topics. It is crucial to consider these factors and logos, ethos, and pathos to become influential speakers. An effective public speaker contains several characteristics, such as courage. One can significantly reduce fear by knowing their subject, practicing, and caring about one's issue. It is pretty normal for every person to offer their first presentation. In such a case, taking measures such as gathering material, being organized, practicing, enjoying the opportunity, and reviewing the assignment will help create a successful presentation. The group also presented on the significance of evaluating a topic. Making considerations, such as if the topic is exciting and worthwhile, is essential. Having a diverse knowledge of the type of speech to offer is critical. It is crucial to remember that there are three types of speech: informative, persuasive, and occasion. Offering a solid thesis statement is also essential during the presentation. Apart from this factor, it is crucial to conduct an audience analysis. This will enable one to offer a speech according to the audience's interest. Lastly, listening to the audience and maintaining ethics is essential for a successful speech.
The second group also did a splendid job. They focused on the selection and arrangement of content. This entailed finding and gathering information organizing and outlining a presentation. The content presented by this group is well displayed in the fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth chapters. The first information presented was the different ways of acquiring information. This includes library resources, periodicals, and the internet. Despite utilizing these different ways, it is crucial to understand that each factor contains its pros and cons. The group also analyzed the significance of organizing and outlining a presentation. From their perspective, the organization helps the listeners better understand a presentation. Before outlining a presentation, it is essential to recognize the three principles: subordination, division, and parallelism. It is vital to have a proper knowledge of how to organize the body of a presentation. This will include the introduction, body, and conclusion. As one introduces this organization into the body, adhering to the different factors that hold the presentation together is vital. This includes transitions, signposts, internal previews, internal reviews, and supporting materials. Learning the different ways to introduce and conclude the presentation is also a significant factor.
After properly outlining and arranging the presentation, it is necessary to deliver it. There are five modes of giving a speech: question and answer, manuscript speech, memorized speech, extemporaneous, and impromptu speech. Just like any other factor, these modes contain several advantages and disadvantages. Gesture plays a significant role when delivering a speech. This also applies to facial expressions. The choice of words is essential during speech delivery. Recognizing that each media impacts terms differently. A perfect example is the media, which contains the ability to foster slung language. Making ethical considerations such as using language respectfully and avoiding exaggeration will create proper use of words. Utilizing technology in a presentation is also essential. These devices may include slide dock programs, computers, text slides, and tables. This makes the presentation more engaging.
The third group explored several tips for presenting information, optimizing an audience's understanding, the speaker's skills, and how to present as a group. In the tenth chapter, the group explained the different ways to help individuals learn. There are five principles of learning. These include using humor and wit, sensory aids, and organization to optimize learning and reward listeners. Several skills are essential for info speakers. These skills involve explaining weight, color, texture, and smell. It is also necessary for an informative speaker to precisely define how something works and occurs. Like any other speech, informative speaking contains several ethical principles, such as offering quality information and exercising caution to avoid misleading the audience. From the eleventh chapter, the group elaborated on the several ways critical thinking and reasoning improve the message. With the help of critical thinking, clarity, structure, and counterarguments are enhanced. Ethical principles are essential in persuasive speaking. There are six principles of persuasion. This includes honesty, respect, transparency, empathy, fairness, and accountability.
In several instances, presentations are presented on special occasions. These types of presentations include presentations to welcome, presentations to pat tributes, speeches of introduction, farewell presentations, and speeches of recognition. There are unique characteristics of such presentations. They include the purpose, style, and organization. There are several ways to prepare for special occasion presentations. These involve analyzing the audience and considering the occasional context, purpose, and message. Despite these measures, one needs to remain honest, stay positive, be respectful towards the audience, and acknowledge the obvious. There are also group presentations, which are pretty common in the society. A perfect example is debates. There is a significant connection between small groups and communication. This is seen since small groups share responsibilities, are interdependent, are more interactive, and coordinated. Skills such as creativity, coordination, incorporation of discussion, and quick resolution of conflict make a small group successful. Just like any other group, a small group should remain organized. This can be achieved by planning a workflow. Such may include the enacting of quality control and assigning presentation roles. This will help the group remain productive.
